XOLAIR is a different type of medication, the first to treat the attacks and symptoms of allergic asthma by blocking immunoglobulin E (IgE), an underlying cause of allergic asthma.
IgE is a substance that naturally occurs in your body in small amounts. When a person who has allergic asthma is exposed to an allergen, his or her body produces too much IgE. When these IgE antibodies combine with allergens, chemicals called mediators are released. In turn, the release of mediators causes the swelling and inflammation of the airways-the symptoms of allergic asthma.
Recently the FDA along with Genentech the makers of Xolair, issued a Xolair black box warning due to the drugs risk of severe or even life threatening allergic reactions. The FDA issued the alert after reviewing 48 cases of anaphylaxis -- life-threatening allergic reactions -- submitted to the agency from June 2003, when Xolair was approved, through December 2005. These cases included symptoms of bronchospasm (narrowing of airways), difficulty breathing, drop in blood pressure, fainting, hives, and swelling of the throat or tongue. Nearly 15% of the patients required hospitalization

Symptoms of anaphylactic shock include trouble breathing, dizziness and swelling in the mouth and throat.
